Knife pair and motion
- Upper knife: The upper knife moves in a vertical, guillotine-like motion. It is the primary cutting blade that moves down to meet the lower knife. On many industrial overlock machines, this blade can be disengaged to allow for overlocking without trimming.
- Lower knife: The lower knife remains stationary. The fabric is fed between the two blades, and the upper knife’s cutting motion works against the lower knife to shear off the excess fabric.
Key functions
- Clean and precise trimming: The main function of the knives is to cut a clean, straight edge on the fabric seam. This is critical for creating a neat, uniform finished edge, which is essential for garment and textile production.
- Reduced bulk: For thicker fabrics or seams with multiple layers, the trimming action reduces the bulk of the seam allowance. This results in a flatter, more manageable seam.
- Prevents fraying: By trimming and overcasting the fabric edge in one step, the knives and looping threads work together to create a secure finish that prevents the fabric from unraveling.
- Allows adjustable trimming width: Most industrial overlock machines allow for the adjustment of the cutting width, also known as the seam allowance. This gives operators control over how much fabric is trimmed.
